The Teifi estuary and the coast of Cardigan Bay are some of the best places in Wales for wildlife watching, and many sightings are possible from the Coast Path or the beach without a boat.
What you might see
- Grey seals along the coast, with pups on quiet beaches in autumn. Keep your distance and keep dogs under control.
- Bottlenose dolphins and porpoises in Cardigan Bay. Cemaes Head and the cliffs are good vantage points on calm days.
- Seabirds and waders on the estuary, cliffs and islands, including fulmars, oystercatchers and, in season, choughs on the cliffs.
- Otters and kingfishers on the Teifi. The Teifi Marshes nature reserve near Cilgerran, a short drive away, is a good place to start.
Responsible wildlife watching
- Never approach seals or pups. Disturbance can cause pups to be abandoned.
- Keep dogs on leads near the cliffs and beaches where seals haul out.
- Take binoculars and be patient. Dawn and dusk are often best.
